    CTO (Configure To Order)

CTO is a business model where products are manufactured only after the customer has configured and ordered them. The model differs from previous business models such as ETO (Engineer To Order) and MTS (Make To Stock) and focuses on a high degree of automation from the customer’s order to the manufacture and delivery of the product.

Both ETO and CTO are about selling customized products. ETO is about engineers needing to be involved to a high degree. CTO enables the customer to configure and create an order without the involvement of engineers.

MTS – Standard products, sold directly from the shelf.

ETO – Special products, always customized. Always requires technical expertise.

CTO – Semi-standard products. Possible to vary according to given rules and constraints. Requires no technical intervention.

    Advantages of CTO:

    • Flexibility for customers
    • Reduced storage costs
    • Focus on customization
