What does a configurator mean in practice?
For us, a configurator is a system support for all the steps involved in moving from selling products off the shelf to customizing products for each request.
It can sometimes be a combination of several different systems that are integrated with each other.
Example of what a configurator can support:
- Customers or sellers need a tool to select product features.
Rules should govern what choices can be made, preferably with visual feedback on how the product’s appearance changes. - CAD documents need to be created to send with the quote.
2D drawing and/or 3D files (step). - Item preparation may need to be done in an ERP system to calculate cost and delivery time.
- Product sheets, product manuals or other documents may need to be created for each product.
- Tender documents need to be created.
